Missives From Troy

I am Helen Doremus. I write. I sing. I create things. I do kung fu. I wear a hat. I occasionally curse. I like pie. When I make a thing that's meant to amuse, it comes here to live.

Lane. Lois Lane.

I love the Fleischer Superman cartoons. Last time I checked, you could get them all legally and for free from the Internet Archive.

We used to watch these in my after school day care growing up. They were crazy cheesy, but also unexpectedly awesome.

Last week, we went over ten (and a few extras) archetypes for good guys found in children’s cartoons and programming of the 80s and 90s. And, as promised, we return to the subject this week with the baddies:

  1. The Vaguely Perverted Over-Compensator
  2. The Bored Rich Guy
  3. The Party Pooper
  4. The Sour Grapes
  5. The Man
  6. The Compulsive Destroyer of All They Survey
  7. The Uptight Control-Freak
  8. The Blood Feuder
  9. The Hero-In-His-Own-Mind
  10. The (Yuppie) Douchebag

I woke up this morning with the deep and persistent need to see a crack music video of Sherlock with the Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers theme song.

Admit it. Such a thing would totally rock your world to candy-colored pieces.

I’ve started three or four lists this week, many of them a little ranty, and after I got bogged down in each of them, I wound up on Youtube, going through my favorite videos for a quick pick-me-up. So it finally occurred to me, why not just take a week and give you ten amusing things to watch? And so, that’s exactly what I did.

  1. Simon’s Cat — “Let Me In!”
  2. The Muppet Show — Danny Boy
  3. Gogol Bordello — American Wedding
  4. OK Go — This Too Shall Pass (Rube Goldberg machine)
  5. The Mountain Goats — Thank You Mario, But Our Princess Is In Another Castle!
  6. Discovery Channel Song “Boom De Ya Da”
  7. Stephen Fry Is Broken By Guests on QI
  8. David Mitchell’s Soapbox — Television Credits
  9. Mitchell & Webb Show — Advertising for Women and Men
  10. Ed Helms sings “Stu’s Song” from “The Hangover”

Just a shot-for-shot live-action recreation of the “Recess” opening theme song.
