Missives From Troy

I am Helen Doremus. I write. I sing. I create things. I do kung fu. I wear a hat. I occasionally curse. I like pie. When I make a thing that's meant to amuse, it comes here to live.

Sunday Soundtrack: Brian Tyler — Iron Man 3

Sunday Soundtrack: Queen — Flash

This movie came up on three separate occasions this weekend. The universe is trying to tell me something…

And you’re welcome.

Sunday Soundtrack: Alan Silvestri — The Avengers Theme

Movie soundtracks. I like them. I own a gaggle of them. So many, in fact, that soundtracks have their own separate CD binder in my collection.

I was trained to sing classical music and while my tastes in day-to-day fare are more contemporary, it is not odd for a playlist of mine to feature Mendelssohn after The Eagles of Death Metal. I’m odd and I accept this. However, because I have an abiding love and appreciation for classical music, I have decided that movie and television (and now video game) soundtracks are essentially the vehicle for most newly composed orchestral music of our time, and therefore a good movie soundtrack should be enjoyed for all its themes and “movements.” I’m such a dork about soundtracks that when my friends and I have seen a particularly good film, they’ll sometimes turn and ask me how soon I’ll be getting the soundtrack to it, or occasionally they’ll sit patiently by smiling and nodding while I rant about how continuity in the tone of a sequel (coughIronMan2cough) could have been better preserved by retaining the same composer. ANYWAY.

I’m a comic book nerd, though not to the extent that I can walk into a comic shop and shoot the shit with the hardcore fanboys in the back. I bathe, for one thing. Needless to say, I watch comic book movies and I am particularly excited by the growing trend of studios putting out high-quality, story-driven adaptations instead of mystical shoot-em-ups. I am also a Joss Whedon fan (and a Robert Downey, Jr. fan, but who’s counting?) and am extra-super excited about Whedon writing the script and directing The Avengers movie to come out later this week. Buzz has been good thus far, which has me fairly itching to put my cash on the barrel to see the movie along with the rest of the hordes.

Accordingly, the song for this week is the theme from the new movie, suitably epic-sounding and composed by Alan Silvestri (who was also responsible for the Captain America soundtrack from last summer). Enjoy the pretties, my friends.

Sunday Soundtrack: Yoav (ft. Emily Browning) - Where Is My Mind?

Personal opinion time. This cover takes a much-covered song that didn’t age as well as it could have and gets far enough off the beaten track to inject new life into what are some truly lovely melodic lines and criminally overlooked lyrics. The breathy vocals suit the instrumentals, bridging the gap between orchestral strings and a very nasal electric guitar and driving beat. A good fit for what is guaranteed to be a very tough week, at least for myself. Enjoy!
