Missives From Troy

I am Helen Doremus. I write. I sing. I create things. I do kung fu. I wear a hat. I occasionally curse. I like pie. When I make a thing that's meant to amuse, it comes here to live.

Musical rollercoaster.

(another — because I can, and because Tumblr won’t let me put two videos in the same post)

Happy Birthday to Hugh Laurie!

Sunday Soundtrack: Cœur de Pirate — C’était Salement Romantique (“It Was Damn Romantic”)

There are songs that make me wish I could pronounce French so that I might sing them. This is one of them.

Translation from here:

You are easier to do than to understand
And fallen*, I didn’t manage to get you
Gone, too far away from you
I wanted you to miss me, feign to exist in your eyes

And in the south of my efforts, I flew far away from you
To cover my heart with a wax
darker than all the glances thrown at my regard

I’ve tried to fly far away from you
I’ve tried to fly far away from you

You are easier to follow
In the city that
became our biggest refuge
And me, lying stretched out on this bed
I watch the part of my life I gave you

And in the south of my efforts**, I flew far away from you
To cover my heart with a wax
darker than all the glances thrown at my regard

I’ve tried to fly far away from you
I’ve tried to fly far away from you

Sunday Soundtrack: The Bravery — Time Won’t Let Me Go

Whenever I look back
On the best days of my life
I think I saw them all on T.V.
I am so homesick now for
Someone that I never knew
I am so homesick now for
Someplace I will never be

Time won’t let me go
Time won’t let me go
If I could do it all again
I’d go back and change everything
But time won’t let me go

Sunday Soundtrack: Jimmy Eat World — Big Casino

And now a song from five years ago, to go with the road trip excerpts. Kit, this one’s for you.

The kids and drunks head back inside.
Well there’s lots of smart ideas in books I’ve never read
When the girls come talk to me I wish to hell I had

I’ll accept with poise, with grace
When they draw my name from the lottery
And they’ll say ‘All the salt in the world couldn’t melt that ice’
I’m the one who gets away
I’m a New Jersey success-story
And they’ll say ‘Lord, give me a chance to shake that hand’

Back when I was younger I was someone you’d’ve liked
Got an old guitar I’d had for years I’d let you buy
And I’ll tell you something else that you ain’t dying enough to know
There’s still some living left when your prime comes and goes

Sunday Soundtrack: Lady Lamb the Beekeeper — Between Two Trees

Are you a predator?

Are you a huntress?

Are you just a girl?

Or are you some sort of bird?

Some bird turned lioness?

Sunday Soundtrack: Catherine Feeny — Unsteady Ground

Watch your step
You should keep your head down
You never know what tomorrow will bring around
Hold onto what good fortune you have found
For you are walking on
Unsteady ground

I’ve started three or four lists this week, many of them a little ranty, and after I got bogged down in each of them, I wound up on Youtube, going through my favorite videos for a quick pick-me-up. So it finally occurred to me, why not just take a week and give you ten amusing things to watch? And so, that’s exactly what I did.

  1. Simon’s Cat — “Let Me In!”
  2. The Muppet Show — Danny Boy
  3. Gogol Bordello — American Wedding
  4. OK Go — This Too Shall Pass (Rube Goldberg machine)
  5. The Mountain Goats — Thank You Mario, But Our Princess Is In Another Castle!
  6. Discovery Channel Song “Boom De Ya Da”
  7. Stephen Fry Is Broken By Guests on QI
  8. David Mitchell’s Soapbox — Television Credits
  9. Mitchell & Webb Show — Advertising for Women and Men
  10. Ed Helms sings “Stu’s Song” from “The Hangover”

Sunday Soundtrack: Gotye ft. Kimbra — Somebody That I Used To Know

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad it was over
